Getting it to work (Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero)
|

I have read so many observations about people having "defective" guitars that I had to write these instructions. First off, Nyko provided very poor instructions but the guitar does work. So before you return your guitar have a read of the instructions below.
Instructions Overview
=====================
To get it to work with Rock Band 2 or Guitar Hero you must first sync or link the guitar with the red Pedal. Then turn the select button to Guitar Hero on the Pedal. (Part of these lessons was on loan from Jim C. from Chicago post. Thanks Jim.)
Detail Instructions to make the guitar work
============================================
1. turn off ps3
2. join red pedal
3. turn on ps3
4. press Nyko button on guitar (goes into slow intermittent mode)
5. press pedal button (pedal goes into quick intermittent mode)
6. press Nyko button on guitar (goes into quick intermittent mode)
7. make sure both are intermittent quick, then press Nyko button one last time
Turn the button on the pedal to Guitar Hero and keep it there regardless of you playing Rock Band 2 or Guitar Hero.
You see, Rock Band 2 recently provided an update to allow Guitar Hero World Tour instruments to work with the game. The updates cause problems with the Nyko guitar playing Rock Band 2. You get crazy button presses if you select "Rock Band" on the Nyko pedal. To fix the problem, just switch the button to "Guitar Hero" on the Nyko pedal and the guitar will work for both games. That it.
Overall Observations
=================
The guitar is existing at a very excellent price equate to OEM, especially if you just want to try out Guitar Hero or Rock Band. I just don't like the look so much but it does work well. If this is half the price of an OEM its a excellent deal for a new or spare instrument. It was on sale here for one quarter the OEM price during their Black Friday sale and Gold Box deal which makes it a fantastic deal. Hope this helps.

| Wow i am out of words. i Like this guitar. The whammy bar is really nice and non weak. The tilt sensor is VERY responsive. even more than the strats sensor. the strum bar is nice and sturdy and clix like in gh3. it has no lag when you play and the receptor is very inovative and cool. It has no on/off button. It turns off by itself. very very nice. the fret buttons are soft and responsive. the faceplate is nicee too. i definatley recomend this guitar over any 3rd party guitar (erm emrm TAC) |
Fantastic third party controller

I'm always unsure about buying third party peripherals since most of the time, they really are heaps of crap, not so in the case of the Frontman guitar. I originally bought it because after a year or so of heavy use on guitar hero 3, my orange button was only registering about 50% of the time, this is due to the separate neck on the PS3 Les Paul, after a while it just starts having connection issues. So I chose to look for a guitar that would work on PS3, had a solid neck, and was really excellent. I got it all in this package.
Compensation: Strum bar feels a bit sturdier, whammy bar is MUCH tougher, works with Rock Band AND Guitar Hero 3, slim body feels much nicer than the bulky Les Paul. Buttons feel more like part of the fret board and less like buttons so sliding, hammer ons, and pull offs are much simpler.
Disadvantages: There is a second or two of delay using the things switch for Rock band, taking into account I use this nearly exclusively for GH and since it's purely extra, I don't consider this much of a problem. Also the neck is slightly wider than most are used to, this took me some time to get used to but I'm playing better now than I've ever before. |
Fantastic third party guitar

To be absolutely honest, I like this guitar better than either first party guitar that comes with Rock Band or Guitar Hero 3. I haven't used the one from the new Guitar Hero, but the FrontMan reigns superior over the older 2.
I will admit that it's larger than the other guitars. It helps if your hand is larger for it. It personally doesn't affect me, as my hands are large enough to handle it appropriately.
One thing that I noticed with this guitar is, unlike a further reviewer mentioned, it really drops FEWER notes than the Guitar Hero 3 Les Paul. Irregularly I would drop a note while land it for a while on the Les Paul, or miss one note in a long rapid stream of single notes/chords, but with this guitar I feel like the timing is superior to that one. I can play owing to the intro to Holiday in Cambodia much better now than I am able to with the Red Octane guitar.
Overall I feel like I commonly don't trust third-party return in terms of game controllers, by Nyko has really hit a home run with this one... |
Cant be beat for the price!

I bought two of these on Black Friday weekend for a ridiculously low price and they are fantastic. Action and rejoinder is equal to that of the LesPaul from GH3 on PS3(haven't played/used on Rock Band). The Fret Buttons are 1-2mm narrower than the original if you're land the guitar vertical and are centered in the middle of the neck. I haven't noticed any problems with pressing the buttons down at all, but I've never had a problem sliding off or striking the button partially to start with. The strum bar clicks nicely and the rejoinder is fantastic. The whammy bar works fantastic too and isn't weak at all and stays place nicely.
The PS3 Button looks cool and lights up different colors to let you know which controller port you are together. No problems with this button or the star/select buttons at all either.
My only gripes about the unit are:
The Receiver: looks cool, just like an things pedal but why is it so freaking huge?(actual things pedal size nearly) And there is a small nob you need to use to switch back and forth between rock band and guitar hero. I've only used these units with Guitar Hero 3 on PS3.
The Strumbar: the tolerances aren't perfect so after clicking it's return to the "zero" or "center" spot isn't perfect....nit picking i know...but from a fit and end standpoint...it could be better. Never unnatural the routine of my playing though.
Last but not least, the size of the NECK: The neck on this guitar is larger than the standard Les Paul. I honestly didn't notice until after a couple hours of playing and switching back to the original LesPaul. By no means, did it affect my skill to play, but I have Large Hands (I'm 6'4" so you do the math) I also play fixed guitar and the neck is still less vital than my real guitars. Side by side with the Les Paul it looks to be about 1/2cm wider across the fretboard but identical in depth. So it's not a huge deal, but if kids are caught up it could be a deal breaker...but for any normal adult I don't reckon it would be a problem.
That's pretty much it. Mostly small tiny things that could be superior and nothing that is a deal breaker unless you have really small hands.
Some people have commented on weight forwards feeling or neck heavy feeling of this guitar and I don't really notice it to be honest. They might be too used to the Les Paul style where the weight is all in the body. The Explorer body is genuinely more weight forwards due to the body design...but the kramer style headstock could be weighted but I don't really notice and quite frankly, I could care less for the price I got these babies for. Hope this helps you buyers on the fence because half of the reviews on here are from idiots. |
